MS CATS OPEN SEASON WITH A WIN

The MS Cats opened the season tonight in strong fashion with a convincing 48-14 win against Southlake Christian Academy.  The Cats were led by tailback Josh Black who scored 5 touchdowns, all on long runs!  The other touchdowns were scored by Conner Andrews on a long run and David Airing on a great pass from James Haigh.  The Cats defense was relentless with some great gang tackling, forced turnovers, and a great interception and long return by Conner Andrews.  Kicker, Brian Collins, made 6 of 7 extra points and pinned the Eagles deep in their own territory several times after long kickoffs.

All the MS Cats players got considerable playing time in the first game of the season.  The Cats play their home opener next Thursday against Bishop McGuiness MS at the MARA football field in Matthews.  They play immediately after the JV Cats open their season against Village Christian Acadmey.

SOUTH CHARLOTTE SPORTS REPORT
SUPER SEVEN POLL
August 27, 2008

Rank Last Week School  Record
1. 1 Charlotte Latin 0-0
Can the Hawks stay on top?  There are a couple of teams below that have their sights set on first.
1A. 1A Butler 0-0
If Butler can take care of business early on, this can be a special season for the Bulldogs.
3. 3 South Meck 1-0
The only reason South Meck didn't take first is that Butler and Latin haven't played a game yet.  These Sabres are a heck of a football team
4. 5 Charlotte Christian 1-0
All cylinders are firing for the Knights.  Ty Linton leads the way in game one.
5. 4 Charlotte Catholic 0-1
The Cougars will rebound from opening loss.  This is a very good football team that opened up with another very good team.
6. NR Marvin Ridge 0-0
The Mavericks move into the Super Seven based on the losses of last week's # 6 and # 7 teams.
7. 6 Ardrey Kell 0-1
The Knights were blown out by Mallard Creek. They have too much talent to not win 6-7 games this season.

The Super Seven Poll is updated every Sunday at www.southcharlottesports.com

CMS announces improvements to athletic-eligibility system

Changes include honor codes, better training
and a whistleblower e-mail and phone line

CHARLOTTE, N.C., Aug. 15, 2008 – Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools announced widespread changes to improve verification for athletic eligibility. A new rule requires students, parents and coaches to sign an honor code before participating in sports. Other changes include a system to track student-athletes, a dedicated phone number and e-mail address to report suspected violations, and additional training for principals, athletic directors and coaches.

“We believe it’s important for everyone involved in sports to play fair,” said CMS Superintendent Dr. Peter C. Gorman. “These changes will help ensure that happens.” (complete release)

How did your summer of baseball go?

“I played baseball for the On Deck O's this summer.  We played in a lot of tournaments in places all around the southeast like in East Cobb, GA and in Charleston, SC.  I had a pretty good summer.  I was one of our top pitchers on the team and made a big stride in hitting.  I also played outfield.” (complete story)

SOUTH CHARLOTTE SPORTS REPORT
SUPER SEVEN FOOTBALL POLL
(Preseason Edition)

1.  Charlotte Latin - The names on the back of the jerseys may be different, but the Hawks will continue to roll up the wins.

1A. Butler - If the Bulldogs remain focused for the entire year, they can challenge Indy for the Southwestern 4A Conference title.

3. South Meck - Two words: “Sabre Pride.”  This can be a special year for South Meck.

4.  Charlotte Catholic - Year after year, the Cougars win football games, why should this year be any different?

5. Charlotte Christian - A regular season with 9 wins is quite possible. Great Defense in place for the Knights.

7. Providence - Last year is over and The Panthers are focused on making the playoffs

Matthews Rugby Club Summer Coed Touch League Season Summary

Matthews Rugby Club Vipers (MRC Vipers) wrapped up their fifth summer of youth touch rugby on Saturday, August 16.  Since 2004, MRC has been offering touch rugby in the south Charlotte region for children ages 6 – 14.  This summer, MRC expanded its summer touch program to include ages 15 – 18.  “Touch rugby is a fun and safe way for boys and girls to learn this great sport”, says Adam Angulo, commissioner of Matthews Rugby Club.

Every summer, MRC begins their summer rugby program from mid-June though mid-August.  In 5 years, they’ve grown from a couple dozen children to almost 100 boys and girls.  It’s a volunteer youth sports program so they’ve been able to keep the total registration and participation cost to under $100 per player.  Coaches vary from experienced National Division 1 rugby players to parents of players new to rugby that have fallen in love with this team focused sport. (complete story)

2009 Charlotte Catholic Left Handed Pitcher, Danny Vliet, has committed to play baseball for the University of North Carolina Asheville.  Danny is a three year letterman in baseball for the Cougars, and two time All-Conference Selection.  In 2008, he was named to the Region 6 team for State Games of North Carolina .    UNC Asheville is a division 1 program that plays in the  Big South Conference, and appeared in their first NCAA Regional in 2006.
